14er 2) Quandary Peak
August 2, 2017
Upon first ascent, every 14er is an adventure. New high-altitude terrain is encountered. Unseen views and sensations are disclosed. This was true when I hiked Quandary. Not used to hiking high peaks, my most vivid memory is being about 1,200 feet or so below the summit and seeing white-beige rocks everywhere: beneath my feet, all around me, and covering every step I’d have to take up the mountain’s shoulder. I recall feeling overwhelmed by the challenge, the altitude working against my lungs, the summit appearing impossibly far away.
Of course, hiked in the summer or in moderate weather and depending on your enjoyment or tolerance for hiking around other people, Quandary can feel like less of an adventure and more of an annoying amusement park line. Despite the implementation of a permit system, Quandary is still the first or second most popular 14er to hike. (Only Quandary, Bierstadt, Torreys, Grays, and Elbert have day hike usage above 20,000 visitors a year, at least twice as much as any other peak). My experience is that hiking around other people feels safer, limiting the sublimity; it also draws our attention towards the social world and away from the natural world. Indeed, much of my joy on this hike stemmed from spending the day with my partner and one of my best friends (and obviously my dog, Hallie). Though the sense of adventure and aesthetic experience was muted on this busy hike, the fun of hiking in good company always makes for a great day.
And, still, hiking high peaks, no matter how many other people are present, always induces awe-inspiring moments. Views of surrounding mountains, punctuated by the blue circles of alpine lakes, rivers glinting like sparkling ribbons weaving through dense patches of trees with blue or white-blue or gray-blue skies above engender expansiveness. I have never stood on a mountain top without feeling wonderment and a connection to the wide world.
The slopes of Quandary also provide a high likelihood of encountering mountain goats. Like most encounters with animals, proximity to goats introduces an element of the unexpected. Though fairly unthreatening and beautiful with their soft cream fur, there is usually some negotiation between human and animal, a desire to observe without offending the bounds of the other’s space. There is a dance of recognition and respect.
Now having hiked 40 14ers, Quandary was my most unremarkable 14er hike. However, I hope I’ve made clear that hiking any peak provides an opening for wonder, awe, and at least a fun day with your hiking crew.
